Inner-City Work Study is seeking students!

Apply now for Spring & Summer 2025

We are seeking students for the Inner-City Work Study program for the spring and summer session.

The work: Students are paid to work at an inner-city community based organization. The work placements offer students a hands-on experience working with inner-city organizations, residents and community leaders in the spirit of reconciliation. Students can expect to work 450 hours from May through to the end of August.

Work placement hosts include organizations that focus on: neighborhood renewal, women’s centers, community based arts, direct community outreach, Indigenous organizations, newcomer settlement, youth education & recreation, environment issues, food security, justice issues, and advocacy.

The study: In addition to the work placement, students will pay for and take a one day a week 6 credit hour course. UIC-3230 Inner-City Work Study for academic credit.  Students will be introduced to relevant theories and practices explaining intergenerational, geographically concentrated poverty, as well as urban and neighbourhood development theories. They will learn about strategies centered on community practice, citizen mobilization, engagement, and empowerment. Most importantly, students will learn to connect these theories with their work in the inner city and how it can be part of reconciliation. Students will explore strategies and tools that can help communities from within as well as building bridges across the divides.

The program uses a roving-classroom, ensuring that students participate in diverse community settings and cultural experiences. Upon completion of the course, students participate in a student-led conference to share their learnings and experiences.

Deadline is December 6, 2024

You will need to create and upload each of the following:

  • Your resume
  • An unofficial transcript. You can obtain this through your WebAdvisor account
  • A cover letter that explains:
    • Your interest in this program
    • Your understanding of the strengths and challenges faced by inner-city communities

Good to know:

  • The program uses a roving classroom - meaning that classes are held at different inner-city organizations during the summer. This ensures that students participate in diverse community settings and cultural experiences.
  • The location of the classes and the course content are challenging for some students - so plan to be uncomfortable.
  • Upon completion of the course, students participate in a student-led conference to share their learnings and experiences.
  • Because students are paid for the work placements they do not qualify as volunteer practicums.
  • Preference is given to applicants who have taken Urban and Inner-City Studies courses and have completed at least 30 credit hours.
  • Students must pay for their course.
